Feel Full Longer

June 26, 2009

filling foodsI hear many people talk about wanting to lose weight but concerned that they will be hungry all the time.   The goal is always to be filling your plate with foods that will keep you feeling full but not high in calories.  What could these foods be?

from That’s Fit

Scientists recently made a discovery they think could put an end to obesity: A substance containing olive oil that can help keep you full for 12 hours. Sure, it’s not available yet, but this isn’t exactly rocket science…

The Best Bicep Curls!

June 23, 2009

What if traditional bicep curls weren’t the only way to tone your arms?  Just by rotating those arms a little bit and challenging your balance and control, you can sculpt beautiful arms in the same amount of gym time.

These 3 bicep curl variations will help you reach the full muscle and challenge it in different ways, leading to a more toned, stronger muscle.

  1. Traditional Bicep Curl
  2. Hammer Bicep Curl
  3. Rotated Bicep Curl

Don’t be afraid to try new things. You can do any of these in any order and when they get easy, you can stand on 1 leg, you can add a squat, you can add more reps or more weight or even add a resistance band.

Have You Seen My Motivation?!

June 19, 2009

candleI often feel disappointed in myself when I’m not motivated to go to the gym or shoot a show.  I mean, I love what I do, so how can I not be thrilled about working or exercising ALL the time?!  It sounds completely ridiculous but I feel that if I’m not completely excited, then I’m not giving it everything that I can.  Of course, keeping myself motivated and then motivating others and then doing it on camera, I guess I’m allowed a few days of head in the sand, but still – I often worry about my motivation and productivity levels.  This post from Zen Habits could not have come at a better time.  The idea that energy and motivation comes in waves makes perfect sense but I still hate dealing with those hours or even days when I’m in slow-mo.  Going forward, I’m going to strive for appreciating my ups and downs and trying to make the most of them… we’ll see how this goes.  I have a feeling this will take years.  << Why Motivation Doesn’t Really Matter >>

iPhone App Review: Good Food Near You

June 18, 2009

good food near youYou read magazines and blog posts that list what food choices you should be making when eating out.   However, if you are like me, you find it hard to remember the best menu option at every restaurant.  I do take my food choices pretty seriously, but I’m not going to demand to see the nutrition facts before ordering.   So, I do the best I can and then check myself in Eat This, Not That when I get home!  That being said, I was pretty excited to test out the Good Food Near You iphone (and blackberry) app.

IMG_0001Pros:

1 – Simple!
It was very easy to enter my zip code and have the restaurants pop up with their menus.

2 -Priority Sort
You can select if you want information based on Lowest Fat, Carbs or Calories.

3 – FREE!
It’s a free app for your iPhone or Blackberry!

Cons:

1 – Chain Restaurants Only
The only restaurants that popped up for me were chains, not the great local eateries.

2 – Selection Variation
Some of the menus were out of date as far as food selections.

3 – Skipped Restaurants
I was looking down the street at a Wendy’s and it did not show up on the list – so not 100% accurate.

IMG_0002Overall:
I found this app helpful and because its free I didn’t have to be disappointed when it wasn’t perfect.  I’m sure the next versions will continue to be better and more robust.  If you travel frequently or find yourself at chain restaurants often, this healthcare & fitness app will help guide you to make a smarter food choice.

You can download it for your iPhone or Blackberry at GoodFoodNearYou.com or at iTunes.

Flip Flops Safety Tips

June 16, 2009

flip flops bad for your health

They are one of the first signs of summer, they show off your perfectly pedicured toes and they even have their own sound…that’s right, flip flops! There is something about those flimsy, flat, colorful shoes that makes everyone think of the beach. However, too much time spent in flip flops could result in some real damage. You may have worn them too long and your knees or hips start to hurt or maybe you stub your toe on everything!  Either way, you should learn about flip flop safety!

This guide on the Dangers of Flip Flops from AOL Health is worth the read!

Working Out with Jillian Michaels!

June 16, 2009

This Fit Life is my review of Jillian Michaels’ Fitness Ultimatum 2009 game for the Wii Fit.

Jillian is famous for her role in the major weightloss transformations that take place on The Biggest Loser so I was anxious to see how her game for the Wii would compare. After struggling for hours to try to make it an enjoyable and challenging experience, I gave up and decided it was a lost cause.  I called in backup to confirm my suspicion and then checked out the Amazon reviews as well – it seems that I’m in good company.

Please comment and tell me your experience with this game.

Beat Mindless Eating at Social Events!

June 12, 2009

buffet-tableParty, BBQ, buffet, wedding, meet and greets… We all have social events to attend but don’t let them make you fat!  Weddings, holidays, birthdays…we associate all of these things with eating and drinking and therefore allow ourselves to indulge or get carried away and then have to deal with the guilt and the calories after the fact.  With some planning and some skepticism (I never trust someone to feed me!) you can make sure that you don’t go hungry or go overboard in social situations.

1 – Scope out your options
Don’t fill your plate before you know exactly what you want to eat. You don’t want to get to the end and then realize that you filled up with your ‘2nd choices’.
I always do a drive by so I know exactly how much plate space to allocate to everything.

2 – Don’t go hungry!
This lowers your inhibitions and you will overeat and eat the wrong things when you finally are served that dinner plate.
How long does it take the happy couple to do pictures after the ceremony?

3 – Anticipate hunger…you know it will happen!
I always have a granola bar in my purse in case of hunger or food choices that are frightening!
Years ago, before sushi was cool, I went to a wedding with a sushi bar reception and the food wasn’t labeled…like I was just going to grab any raw item and eat it?!  For the love…

4 – Be a positive food pusher!
If the event is a potluck, then jackpot!  This is your opportunity to make something that you can eat guilt-free and encourage others to enjoy healthier choices as well.  This is a twofer because you know exactly what you are consuming AND other people will probably love it.
I have never taken home leftover fruit salad,  EVER!

4 Minute Fruit Salad Recipe – Perfect for cookouts & potlucks!

June 11, 2009

Great news!  Fruit salad is probably the easiest and simplest thing you will ever make.  It can be anything from a couple cans of fruit or leftover fresh berries to an overwhelmingly awesome taste sensation with so many wonderful seasonal selections.   The best part – you can pick the fruits you enjoy, use the season to guide you, size the dish to your party and with a dollop of Cool Whip, vanilla yogurt or ice cream, you have an easy summer dessert as well!

(I’m not even going to mention that fruit salad is healthy because I don’t want to give it a bad reputation!)

fruit-salad

AmyMac’s Fruit Salad for 4 in 4 minutes:

1 large can of each: Pineapple, peaches, mandarin oranges

Small containers: strawberries, blueberries

AND…

my secret weapon…
A handful of maraschino cherries quartered and sprinkled into the salad.

Directions:
Make sure everything is cut to bite-size.
Drain the liquid from the cans.
Mix everything into bowl.
Chill.
Enjoy!

Ingredient Options: (these vary on party size so you can add or subtract to your taste and need)

Canned Fruits (in their own juices):
Pineapple (chunks or tidbits)
Peaches (slices)
Mandarin Oranges

Fresh Fruits:
Strawberries
Blueberries
Raspberries
Blackberries
Kiwi
Grapes
Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Apples – (I think these are too crunch for the salad but lots of people like it.  They brown quickly so use some lemon juice or add them at the end.)
Bananas – (I also don’t use these unless I add them at the end because they usually brown and end up soggy.)

Martha Stewart Finishing Touch:
Adding a sprig of mint is so easy and really does finish the dish, which is great when you are entertaining!
