How do you keep the momentum of new year’s resolutions. Everyone gets excited about the clean slate of the new year and sets out to make this the best year ever. However, by the end of Feb. and sometimes Jan. – the enthusiasm starts to fade. There are some easy things you can do to either keep the momentum or fire it back up!

Keeping your Resolutions:

Set yourself up for success with these 3 tips:

Prioritize
There’s always a million things we’d like to improve upon but start small and just pick one a month.

Set Milestones and Goals
Setting little milestones to reach a big goal is the best way to stay on track and motivated. It can be weight loss, uncluttering, relaxing or saving money – whatever the goal, you can feel good by accomplishing small chunks at a time.

Track Your Progress
Using a Food Journal, an app, a daily email, it doesn’t matter how you keep track of your progress but doing so will help you stay accountable.

These are just a few tips on how you can make your new year’s resolution a reality! Keep with it!

Of course, a healthy portion-controlled diet and exercise, like walking and jogging, is key but many times, people don’t know which exercises they should do to target this area and see results. I love these 4 exercises because they strengthen and tighten from the inside, out.

We can all name the things we know we should or shouldn’t be doing, but creating a list of 50 items you want to accomplish this week in an effort to be healthy is simply not going to help. It takes 21 days to make a habit, so it would seem like the best way to get on track would be to pick one item each month and focus on making sure you do it!

Thighs are always a trouble zone for women (including myself) and I’m often asked what my favorite inner thigh exercises are. I have 3 that I really like and always see results with:

Side Lunges – you will feel this move working its magic on the inner thighs no matter how in shape you are!
Plie Squats – This squat works the legs and butt and improves your flexibility!
Inner Thigh Lifts – Get ready for shorts and swimsuits with this thigh thinning exercise!

In addition to helping to trim your butt and thighs, strengthening the inner and outer thighs helps to stabilize the knee and prevent injury or soreness. these are just 3 of my favorite inner thigh exercises, give them a try and let me know what you think!

Use these fit tips to help you conquer your weight loss goal once and for all!

Losing the last 10 pounds is hard, there is no doubt about it. You feel like you’ve made all the exercise and diet changes you can make so what now? Plus, to top it off, there are real life obstacles that are always waiting to sabotage you! A new job, a promotion or even just a hectic job can keep you from losing that last 10 pounds.

Here are a couple ways you can beat the system:

Swap your high calorie coffee drink for a sensible plain coffee, tea or water beverage.

Make a ‘no candy bowl’ pact with your office mates.

Pack snacks like yogurt, string cheese or mixed nut servings for snacks so you don’t hit the vending machine.

At business lunches, order a side salad and broth-based soup, or a grilled sandwich and then don’t eat most of the bun, skip fries and order a side salad or veggies.

Have a healthy breakfast every morning – hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, and even an english muffin with peanut butter will get you off to the right start!

Volunteer to run errands – to the store, fax machine, upstairs to marketing – doesn’t matter! Moving more will help to keep your mind focused and your body calorie-burning.

Well these are just a few tips to making changes that can help you lose those last 10 pounds even with your crazy busy job!

1 – Healthy Thanksgiving Recipes

You can go crazy and have a tofu turkey but that won’t cut it with me. I want the real deal, I just want it lighter!
In my house, we:

use chicken broth and a bit of garlic to make the mashed potatoes instead of milk, butter, sour cream.

Lighter Mashed Potatoes:

Cook the potatoes in chicken broth.

Then add garlic and maybe more broth when mashing. Delicious!

make our pumpkin pies from scratch – SO EASY! Grab a pie pumpkin at the Farmer’s Market or grocery store and you are good to go!

This year, I’m going to try a couple of recipes from Clean Eating magazine and I’m very excited! I’ll let you know how they turn out! Also don’t forget that depending on how traditional you want to be, you can branch out and make a different delicious, healthy meal or sides to go with that turkey.

Other healthy Thanksgiving dinner recipes:

Healthy Thanksgiving Recipes: Eating Well – The pear, prosciutto and hazelnut stuffing looks amazing!

Healthy Thanksgiving Receips: Food Network – Ellie’s sweet potato-pecan casserole sounds delicious!

2 – Get Moving

There are several events happening over the long weekend, some even on Thanksgiving day! I love the idea of a morning turkey trot with the family!

Here’s a list of just the Turkey Trots on Active.com – you can refine the search and see what’s going on in your city. Also remember to keep your ears open because many events aren’t listed here or named the same. This is a great way to get moving, spend time with the family and most events support a charity.

3 – Proactive and then Reactive

You know that you are going to eat too much over the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s going to happen so you can plan ahead by eating lighter the week before, adding 5 extra minutes to your fitness sessions and then doing the same for the week after. (Keep this regimen up through the holidays if you have lots of food and parties surrounding you.) It’s much easier to take control of your food and fitness during the normal days so you can relax and enjoy the holidays and events.

These are just a few tips on how to have a healthier Thanksgiving. Most of them, I do personally to keep myself and my family healthier through the holidays. I hope you find them helpful, try some of the amazing recipe links and enjoy the upcoming holidays. One last note: The one thing I do on Thanksgiving day is simply only eat 1 plate of food with dinner (+ pie!). I don’t overstuff myself because I ate being miserably full. When I’m hungry a few hours later, I enjoy the leftovers. We even get a really nice loaf of bread for sandwiches and that’s when the cranberry dressing really gets used as a spread! There’s no reason to overeat at the actual meal because the leftovers are so delicious. If you are going somewhere or people are only staying for dinner, get the disposable tupperware dishes and either dish up leftovers for people or ask for leftovers – the host will think it’s a great idea! Happy Thanksgiving! ~amy

Remember, you can always sign up for our 10 Pound Cut Down workout program and work out less than an hour a week!

The exercises have to work the shoulders, biceps and triceps so that the arms look well-rounded, toned and sexy!

I don’t subscribe to theory that lifting light weights is the way to go. I think that you have to continually increase the weight sizes so that you are constantly building muscle and gaining strength. All of these free weight exercises for women are going to add muscle tone and WILL NOT bulk you up. There is no worry about that unless you are spending hours in the gym and taking lots of supplements, promise. You may notice that you get a bit bigger before you get smaller but most of the time that means you are building muscle under the fat and those muscles (along with a calorie deficit) will help to burn the fat.

Here’s a working out tip to help you make progress in a strength training routine. Lifting weight can be really complicated and intimidating. This is especially true when it comes time to increase the intensity. Do you add more reps, more weight, if so, how much?

To keep it simple, follow these guidelines:

When you first begin lifting, select a weight that starts to make you struggle around rep 8. Begin by doing 3 sets of 10.

When that becomes comfortable, increase to 3 sets of 12 reps.

When THAT becomes easy, do 3 sets of 15 – all with the same size weight.

Once that becomes easy, you can move up to the next weight size and go back to doing 3 sets of 10.

You then start the whole process again.

Increasing your weight according to these steps will help keep your muscles challenged and simultaneously increase your overall strength and endurance.

Going to college usually means a complete change in your life routine. A change in your schedule, your eating habits, your responsibilities, no more high school athletics, squeezing in studying, a bit of partying and the fine art of laundry. It also usually means that you gain some weight, commonly known as the ‘freshman fifteen’.

Here are some tips on how to prevent it:

1) Fruits and Vegetables. Dorm food isn’t healthy but you don’t have to pig out either. Watching your portions and filling up on the salad bar is a great alternative, as long as you leave the bacon, cheese, croutons and loads of dressing out of the equation.

2) Rec Center. When you get out of college, you’ll have to pay lots of money for a gym membership that is half the facility that you have just a few steps away. Take advantage of all they have to offer and make some new friends while doing it.

3) Cut down on drinking. Liquor can help to pile the pounds on – especially when combined with late night eating.

4) Walk everywhere. Think of all the calories you will burn if you spend half of everyday walking to class, meet friends, meetings and the rec center!

5) College grilled cheese. I grew up in a healthy house and I just couldn’t stomach some of the greasy food days in the dorm but didn’t always want salad either. I made a college grilled cheese and although not the best alternative, I’m sure I came out ahead of those who ate the cafeteria food.

Toast 2 pieces of bread.

Put in microwave with a piece of cheese in the middle – 13 seconds later, you have a (greasy-free, butter-free) grilled cheese sandwich!

These are just a few examples of how you can battle the ‘Freshman 15′! Good Luck!

The Human Trainer is a suspension system, similar to TRX, but offers more versatility in its training. It is designed to work your entire body using your own weight as resistance and will work for any fitness level targeting strength, cardio and flexibility.

Amy Mac’s Review: First of all, it’s really easy to set up. At first, I was concerned when I saw all the pieces but it took me about 3 minutes flipping through the User Manual to figure out how to use it and what all the pieces were for. I opted for the over the door mount because since I was only testing the product, I didn’t want to drill holes in my ceiling or door frame. However, the mounts are sleek and if I was going to keep it, I would definitely use the mounts because it allows for more exercises and workout options.

I was able to do lots of exercises and liked that you can make exercises easier or harder by just adjusting your body’s angle. This means you aren’t spending tons of time adjusting weights and equipment. I think this is great for people that don’t have the time, space or money for weight lifting equipment like dumbbells. It also allows you to go out to the park, beach or even your backyard and get a great workout. The Human Trainer package is $149 for the essential setup and $269 for the full potential, which is the package that I tested.

I think this is a great home workout system that doesn’t require bulky weights but I would recommend getting the program dvd so you can learn to do short, efficient workouts to maximize your results. Thank you to the Astone Fitness for sending us the Human Trainer to review and letting us give it away to someone in our audience – stay tuned for details!

When you are headed for the gym, out for a quick jog or a ½ day bike ride, do you reach for your favorite sports drinks? Should you?

I am often asked about the necessity of sports drinks. Sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade provide carbohydrates, which result in a burst of energy that may be helpful in endurance events or games. These drinks serve the purpose of rehydrating you and replenishing the sodium and potassium your body needs at a faster rate than water. Water is great for hydration but sweat is more than just water, and those elements do need to be replenished quickly in a high intensity situation.

HOWEVER! Sports drinks contain calories and unless you get the sugar-free versions, they have lots of sugar as well. If you aren’t doing intense, endurance activities, then you need to skip the sports drinks and all of their calories and sugar!

Still curious as to whether your workouts are sports drink worthy? Here are my rules!

Workout time should be more than 60 minutes BUT it can be less if the weather is really hot and humid because it will deplete you faster

The workout should involve intense cardio this means you better be running, jumping, rowing, dancing or cycling your booty off!

Obey the serving size! It may not be necessary to drink the whole bottle to gain some energy and restore your electrolytes, so be sure to check the serving size so you don’t get tricked into a bundle of unnecessary calories.

Follow these rules and you’ll won’t just be downing these drinks because they look really awesome and hardcore in the commercials, you’ll be using them to your body’s benefit.

Can a sleep cycle alarm clock help maximize your sleep time?

Is it possible to wake up refreshed every day?

The answers to these questions was what I was looking for when I began my research on sleep cycle alarm clocks and reviewing the Wakemate system.

What is the Wakemate? The Wakemate is a sleep cycle alarm clock consisting of a wristband and a phone application that monitors your motion while sleeping and uses science to translate the motion data into sleep data.

How does it wake you up? You set a 20 minute alarm range and it then using the sleep data, it picks the moment when you are in the lightest sleep state and wakes you at that time so you feel more refreshed. You can also use the analytics that the wristband collects to monitor your sleep patterns and see when you get the best sleep, how long you need to sleep and if there are any triggers that hinder or improve sleep.

Our Wakemate Trial Results:

Amy Mac: I found that I don’t sleep well and had trouble finding patterns of success and no matter what i didn’t wake up refreshed. BUT I did find that my best sleep happens when I have 7 hours and eat a serving of greek yogurt before bed.

Nik: Nik woke up every single morning before the alarm sounded so he didn’t really see much benefit.

Chris: Chris thought it was great, woke up refreshed and ended up on the wakemate “top sleepers” list every single week throughout our trial because he had such a great sleep score.

Pros:

Overall, I found the data interesting because I could see how fast I fell asleep, how many times I woke up in the middle of the night and when my periods of light and deep sleep occurred. I also enjoyed trying to better my sleep score every night!

Cons:

I did find the battery life frustrating on the wristband but found that as long as I turned it off, I could run a night or two without charging it. I also wish the app was a little more robust and didn’t send me to the website to see the data* but I’ve talked to the Wakemate people about both of these issues and they are already working on them. A big thank you to them for letting us try out their product and they are even letting us give away the 3 units we tested!

*Update from Wakemate: WakeMate 2.0 is in the App Store and it allows you to view all the sleep data inside the app!

These upper body stretches will help to relieve stress, soreness, help to prevent injury and increase flexibility in your arms, shoulders and wrists. Typing and sitting at a desk all day can really have a toll on the shoulders, back and wrists. Sometimes, even just sleeping can give you stiff neck and shoulders. Stretch these upper body muscles and feel relief! You should always stretch when the muscles are warmed up so ease into them if you jump right into them.
