How do I Use a Stability Ball?
We have all seen them in the gym. The super sized beach balls known as stability balls, but how AND WHY would I use one? Stability Ball Workouts. This is a topic that could go on for days, but let me make it as simple as possible. A stability ball can make just about any exercise MORE EFFECTIVE.
2 quick examples of stability ball workouts are:
Sit ups – proven to provide a larger range of movement than laying on the floor essentially working out parts of your abdominals that don’t normally get worked out.
Pushups – also very effective because you are getting a workout in your thigh, butt and core as you stabilize yourself on the ball.
There are literally hundreds of moves you can do on the stability ball to strengthen and stretch your body. Before you run to the gym and start playing with those giant balls take a minute and figure out what size of ball is right for you.
21 inch ball (55 cm)- 4ft 11’ – 5ft 4’
25 inch ball (65 cm) – 5ft 5’- 5ft 11’
29 inch ball (75 cm)- 6ft+
You will VERY QUICKLY become accustomed to which ball is right for you so don’t worry too much if you think you are using the wrong size. A general rule of thumb is if you sit on the ball with your feet on the floor, your legs should be at a 90 degree angle.
