SPF<\/h1>\n

\"\"<\/a>SPF stands for \u201csun protection factor,\u201d and is the rating used on sunscreens. \u00a0If you\u2019re going to be outside for more than twenty minutes, you should wear some sort of sun protection.<\/p>\n

You can figure out the SPF code by taking the amount of time you will be outside without turning red and multiplying that number by the SPF number. \u00a0For example, if I can be outside for 10 minutes without protection before turning red, then when I \u00a0wear SPF 15 I should be able to stay out for 150 minutes (10 minutes x SPF 15). \u00a0\u00a0To be safe, however, you should reapply about every two hours. \u00a0This is especially true if you are swimming or sweating.<\/p>\n

You may also have noticed that many cosmetics, such as foundation, lipstick, moisturizes, and even lip balms are now touting SPF numbers. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Whenever possible, these products are preferable. \u00a0However, they usually have low SPF ratings, so you shouldn\u2019t expect them to serve as substitutes for sunscreen during long or extreme exposure to the sun.<\/p>\n

Lastly, remember that even when it\u2019s cloudy, 80% of the sun\u2019s rays pass through.<\/p>\n
