{"id":7126,"date":"2010-08-31T12:35:49","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T18:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.withamymac.com\/news\/?p=7126"},"modified":"2011-02-10T12:51:58","modified_gmt":"2011-02-10T18:51:58","slug":"food-terms-definitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withamymac.com\/news\/2010\/08\/31\/food-terms-definitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Terms Definitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><a title=\"quick fitness tips amymac book\" href=\"http:\/\/fittip.me\/9IbNzP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7202\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" title=\"fitness attack book\" src=\"http:\/\/www.withamymac.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/NEW-BOOK-PROMO32.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withamymac.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/NEW-BOOK-PROMO32.png 474w, https:\/\/www.withamymac.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/NEW-BOOK-PROMO32-300x40.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u2026 only\u00a061 days until the book release!<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>===<\/div>\n<div><strong><\/p>\n<h1>DEFINING FOOD TERMS<\/h1>\n<p><\/strong><a title=\"food definitions\" href=\"http:\/\/fittip.me\/aUYA7e\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7127\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"food definitions\" src=\"http:\/\/www.withamymac.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/food-definitions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>Have you ever been overwhelmed by all of the terms that are used to describe foods that are supposedly better for you? \u00a0Let\u2019s take a look at what some of them mean.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ORGANIC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the USDA website, the definition of organic is as follows: \u201cOrganic farming systems rely on ecologically based practices such as cultural and biological pest management, exclusion of all synthetic chemicals, antibiotics and hormones in crop and livestock production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Products that are 95 \u2013 100% \u201corganic\u201d are certified and use the USDA green and white seal. \u00a0If the item says that it is made with organic ingredients, but does not have the seal, you can assume that it is between 70% and 95% organic.<\/p>\n<p>The International Food Information council defines \u201cfortified\u201d by the following: \u201cFortified foods have nutrients added to them that were not present originally. \u00a0For example, milk is fortified with Vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus found naturally in milk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>FREE RANGE OR FREE ROAMING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFree range\u201d or \u201cfree roaming\u201d simply means that the animals have access to the outdoors. \u00a0The use of the term doesn\u2019t require that producers allow the animals outside for a minimum amount of time or even require that the animal ever actually spent time outside.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NO HORMONES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The USDA has banned the use of the term \u201chormone free\u201d on meats and poultry because hormones are naturally produced by the animals. \u00a0You may, however, find the term \u201cno hormones\u201d on these products. \u00a0When it comes to pork and poultry products, the government prohibits the use of supplemental hormones; so, whether the package includes this term or not, the product shouldn\u2019t contain additional hormones.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to beef, the term \u201cno hormones administered\u201d may be used only when the producer provides the USDA with sufficient documentation indicating that no supplemental hormones were used while raising the animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POSSIBLE ADDITIONS (MEAT AND POULTRY):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NATURAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Producers are allowed to use the term \u201cnatural\u201d for products that do not contain artificial ingredients or added colors and are only processed minimally. \u00a0Minimal processing means that the process does not make a fundamental change to the raw product. \u00a0When used, the producer must also identify on the label what the term \u201cnatural\u201d is describing; for example, the producer must explain whether the product does not contain artificial ingredients or added colorings, or whether it is minimally processed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NO ANTIBIOTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Producers are allowed to use the term \u201cno antibiotics added\u201d on meat and poultry labels only when they have provided the USDA with appropriate documentation that demonstrates that the animals were raised without the use of antibiotics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>===<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Fitness Attack #2<\/em><\/strong>, the book, is going to be released on Halloween 2010! \u00a0That\u2019s right,\u00a0<strong>10\/31\/10<\/strong>!
