MAXIMIZE YOUR WORKOUT

So you’ve just finished your 3 sets of 10 bicep curls for weeks on end, and you’re thinking that you might want to change things up.  What do you do?  The good news is you don’t necessarily have to find a new move or up the weight just yet.  Here are five quick ideas to keep your current routine fresh and challenging:

1. Pause at the top of your lift for two seconds.  Putting the emphasis on a different section of the move will create a new obstacle in the resistance training.

2. Do the moves faster or slower.  This would activate different sections of the muscle while simultaneously making you re-focus on the task.  You should see improvements in both strength and endurance with the particular move.
3. Do the moves while standing on an unstable surface.  This will cause your core to activate in order to allow you to keep you balance while doing the exercise.  Anytime you add an obstacle to your training, you’ll be increasing the intensity and demand on that muscle group.  Adding an unstable surface will also ensure that you’re squeezing your butt and abs.  Of course, as a reminder, be careful!
4. Close your eyes or look away from the mirror.  Doing this will likely throw off your balance and force you to focus.  It may sound silly, but give it a try!

5. Change the order of your moves.  Your body adjusts to a routine and will become more efficient with that routine over time.  Switching the order of your exercises will force your body to “think” and react differently.

Implementing any of these suggestions will help to keep your workout from becoming stale and keep your mind from zoning out.  Even these tiny changes can help to activate every part of the muscle you’re working, as well as help the core to keep you balanced.

There are multiple ways to modify your workout, but these are some quick two second changes that will help you improve your overall weightlifting results!
