FLU-FREE?

As summer winds down, I begin looking forward to some of my favorite fall-related things: football, apple cider, sweatshirts and chili cook-offs.  Unfortunately, fall also signals the beginning of flu season.

Hopefully, we all know by now to wash our hands thoroughly and to cough and sneeze into our elbows.  What you may not know, however, is that there are foods that can help to keep you healthy as well:

  • Foods rich in antioxidants, such as green tea and garlic, can help keep those germs from getting the best of you.
  • The effects of Vitamin C are still being studied, but it might help prevent you from getting sick or at least reduce the symptoms if you do.  If you want to give it a try, look for foods like berries, oranges, broccoli and spinach.
  • Foods high in zinc, such as lean meats, can help keep your immune system working its best.

You can find supplements for all of these, but studies consistently find that getting your vitamins and minerals from the food itself is the best method.
